This policy explains how the Monthly Expenses app (“the app”) handles your information. It covers the app on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Nothing you record leaves your device. Your transactions, titles, notes, categories, accounts, budgets and attachments are stored only on your device, and only you can send them anywhere — by saving a backup or an export.
Your records — your transactions, attachments, and the automatic backups the app keeps for undo — are kept out of your phone’s own automatic backup. On Android, this app never lets Google Drive back up any of the app’s data on its own, including your settings and the widget’s numbers. On iOS, the app asks iOS to leave the folders holding your records, and the numbers shown on the home-screen widget, out of an iCloud backup and a computer backup taken over a cable; your settings are not covered by that request, so iOS can still carry them in a backup like it would for any other app. Reinstalling the app therefore starts you with nothing — the way to carry your data over is a backup you saved yourself. Moving to a new phone with Android’s own transfer still brings it with you on Android 12 and later, because a device-to-device move is you taking your own data with you rather than a copy kept somewhere; on Android 11 and below, that transfer does not carry it either. On iOS, a device-to-device move (Quick Start) is expected not to carry it either, but Apple does not document exactly what such a move keeps, so a backup you saved yourself is the reliable way to bring it to a new iPhone.
The app shows banner ads on two of its screens, and a full-screen ad once you have done ten things in the app that day, shown when you finish something such as a PDF report or a CSV export — through Google AdMob. Ads are the only reason the app uses the internet at all. AdMob receives technical information about your device in order to choose and count an ad — never anything you have recorded. You can buy “Remove ads” once, and then the ad software is never started at all.
On Windows, Linux and macOS there are no ads, and the app makes no network connections whatsoever.
The developer has no access to any of it.
We collect nothing. There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics and no crash reporting, and there is no server of ours for anything to be sent to. The developer cannot see your data or your usage.
The free app shows a banner at the bottom of the Home screen and the bottom of the Insights screen. It also shows a full-screen ad right after you finish something and are on your way out of it (leaving Insights for Home, or after a PDF report, a CSV export, or a finished import), but only after ten things done in the app that day (an entry saved or a screen opened). Each ad shown starts that count again. They are served by Google AdMob (Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC), and they are why the Android app asks for internet access.
What the app never gives the advertiser. AdMob is handed nothing you have recorded: no amounts, titles, notes, categories, accounts, attachments or search terms, and no keywords derived from any of them. The request the app makes carries no information about you at all.
What Google receives anyway, because it is what serving an ad over the internet involves:
Google uses these to choose an ad, count and measure it, and detect fraud. Google’s own explanation is at How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.
Your choice. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland the app shows Google’s consent form before it requests its first ad, and you can change your answer at any time from Settings → Privacy options. On iOS, wherever you are, the app also asks once, through iOS’s own prompt and after that consent form where there is one, whether ads may be chosen using your device’s advertising identifier; you can change that answer later in your iPhone’s Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. Saying no to either still shows ads, just not personalised ones; it never means fewer features or a nagging reminder, and it changes nothing about what you record, which the advertiser is never given either way.
No ads before you have looked round. No ad is requested, and neither the consent form nor iOS’s tracking prompt appears, until the setup page and the walkthrough are finished, and the full-screen ad is never requested during your first session with the app. No ad loads while the app is locked, and there are no ads on the entry forms, the walkthrough, a dialog, the home-screen widget or the PDF report itself — only the two banner slots and the full-screen ad described above. Buying “Remove ads” (below) hides that one too, on the same switch as the banners.
Children. The app is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. Where a store’s family policy applies, the ads must be suitable for it.
App lock is optional and off by default. When it is on, the app asks your device’s operating system to check your fingerprint, face, or screen lock. The app never receives or stores your biometric data or your screen lock code; it only learns whether the check succeeded.
INTERNET): used only so the banner and full-screen ad slots can load an ad. No other part of the app connects to the network: entry, budgets, recurring, notes, insights, reports, import, backup and attachments all work with the network off.com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID): used by AdMob as described above. Android lets you delete or reset this identifier in your device settings, and the app has no other way to recognise you.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE) and Android’s own advertising services (ACCESS_ADSERVICES_AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_ATTRIBUTION, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_TOPICS): declared by Google’s ad library, not by us. The last of these is Android’s Topics system, by which the operating system — not this app — may give an advertiser a broad interest category worked out from the apps you use. It is governed by your consent answer and by your Android settings, and it is never told anything you have recorded here. Buying “Remove ads” means the library is never started, so none of it runs.USE_BIOMETRIC, Face ID on iOS): used only for app lock. The app does not ask for your location, contacts, calendar, messages, call history or health data, and a release build is checked on every release to make sure none of those has crept in.
Delete items in the app, or uninstall the app to remove all of its data, including automatic backups. On a computer, uninstalling may leave the app’s data folder behind; you can delete it yourself. Backup and export files you saved elsewhere stay where you put them until you delete them.
The app is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them. We collect nothing from anyone; what the ad network receives is described under Advertising above, and buying “Remove ads” stops even that.
